Qualifications of Elders

5For this reason I left you in wCrete, that you would set in order what remains and xappoint yelders in every city as I directed you, 6namely, zif any man is above reproach, the aahusband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of abdissipation or acrebellion. 7For the
Or bishop
,
aeoverseer must be above reproach as afGod’s steward, not agself-willed, not quick-tempered, not ahaddicted to wine, not pugnacious, ainot fond of sordid gain,
8but ajhospitable, akloving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 alholding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in amsound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

10 anFor there are many aorebellious men, apempty talkers and deceivers, especially aqthose of the circumcision, 11who must be silenced because they are upsetting arwhole families, teaching asthings they should not teach atfor the sake of sordid gain. 12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, auCretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this reason avreprove them awseverely so that they may be axsound in the faith, 14not paying attention to Jewish aymyths and azcommandments of men who baturn away from the truth. 15 bbTo the pure, all things are pure; but bcto those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their bdmind and their conscience are defiled. 16 beThey profess to know God, but by their deeds they bfdeny Him, being bgdetestable and bhdisobedient and biworthless bjfor any good deed.
